Chances are, if you’ve been using a computer for anything more than playing Minesweeper, you’ve had to buy a USB hub in the past. Nowadays the average PC comes with at least 6 USB ports but back then you were lucky if you had two. Now that USB 3.0 technology is upon us, we’re faced with a very similar situation. Computer manufacturers are enticing us to buy with the promise of integrated USB 3.0 ports but what ends up in the fine print is that your new state of the art machine only has one or two of these and the rest are just yesterday’s news—USB 2.0 tech. Thanks to LaCie you can now thumb your nose at those stingy PC manufacturers because their new Hub4 gives you 4 USB 3.0 ports in a sleek little black box.
The device functions just like any other USB port ever has, it switches signals between active devices (printers, etc.) and allows you to effectively quadruple the number of ports available. And as I mentioned before, LaCie has really given some consideration to style. The Hub4 features a curvaceous design and post-modern grey and black coloring for the techno-geek with an eye for fashion.
The only drawback is that the device requires a dedicated power source which means you‘re going to have to find an unused outlet in the mess of wires leading to your surge protector. That and the fact that the demand for integrated USB 3.0 technology will soon be so great that manufacturers will be placing multiple ports in their new devices making this peripheral as obsolete as you old USB hub is today.
Still, for $59.99 you can’t beat this beast—that is if you really need USB 3.0.
