Trashed CD's Are No More Dangeous to Atmosphere - - Innovative Disc Recycling Technique Developed by Researchers at Da-Yeh University

Statistics point out that over 60 million discs are dumped each year in Taiwan, which gives rise to a lot of problems as discs, which are made from polycarbonate materials and don’t decompose. Researchers at the Da-Yeh University believe they’ve found a solution, which can clean all the coatings from discs in a few minutes without damaging them.

The technique involves alcohol and nitric acid leaching and has won patent rights. The process can be used to clean both DVDs and CDs, but cleaning a CD is much quicker since it just has one side. DVDs on the other hand have two sides and they have to be separated before the actual recycling process kicks in.

The researchers state that by the end of the process, transparent polycarbonate discs are left, which can easily be reused.
