Have a 25 years old mobile phone at home and don’t know what to do with it? Don’t just flog it. This story may make you reconsider your decision. A Finnish Guy, Jani Pönkkö, put in a laborious 40 hrs of work and built a, voila! Media centre PC, out of a Mobira Talkman phone. What? You were expecting an ASIMO! That may be funny for you, but it gave the Finnish guy a lot of satisfaction. In this world where, reduce-reuse-recycle, are the buzz words, how could he have done such a thing as trashing the old phone (well, he couldn’t have even if he had wanted to, because the phone was his bosses’).
Pönkkö (the dots look cool) basically modded a 1984 Mobira Talkman mobile phone, into a media PC, complete with a motherboard, DVI-cable assembly, 32GB hard drive, status LEDs, Wi-Fi card, sound card, speaker, and a 128 x 182 OLED panel. Well the outcome was not as fruitful as he’d have thought, as the presence of a tiny heat sink led to extreme heating of the device. More over he couldn’t watch any movie, for the fear that he might get a squint watching a movie in such small screen and the sound quality was poor. But the one thing that Pönkkö was happy with was; the looks were intact (barring the working part). Fan of the mod? Go check out the whole story at Metku.net.
