Seems some recent research suggests caffeine is well and truly the nation's number one addiction. Current average intake of caffeine runs to 240mg -- the equivalent of about four cups of coffee per day. Related stats point out 63% of the population is sleep deprived, so caffeine is now forming part of that daily fix to push back the tide of collapse. Which just makes things worse. Which requires more caffeine. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
In other addiction news, 19% smoke tobacco daily, while 20% of those over 30 smoke cannibis daily... DAILY... with 25% smoking it weekly. 8% drink alcohol daily, and 'frequent users' of ecstasy (3%), heroin (1%) and cocaine (1%) bring up the tail. Even problem gambling is sitting at 1% addiction levels.
But seriously. Who could stay mad at caffeine for being our addiction of choice? It's so lovely. And electrifying. And a blogger's very best friend...
