Tom Cruise files $50m defamation lawsuit against tabloids over abandoned daughter claims

Tom Cruise is reportedly suing Bauer Publishing with a $50 million lawsuit for defamation and seeking $50 million in damages over a cover that claimed he'd "abandoned" her six-year-old daughter Suri after his split from Katie Holmes.

According to details; actor's lawyer Bert Fields, the lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Wednesday (October 24) for defamation and false-light invasion of privacy against Bauer Publishing — which publishes responsible parties Life & Style and In Touch, which published on July 30 devastating headline, "Suri in Tears: Abandoned By Her Dad" accompanied by a picture of a tearful Suri; as well as the October 1st cover of In Touch, which shows a picture of Suri above the headline, "ABANDONED BY DADDY."

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri," attorney Bert Fields said in a statement Wednesday. "To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible."

"These serial defamers are foreign-owned companies with their global headquarters in Hamburg. They take money from unsuspecting Americans by selling their malicious garbage. Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down,” Fileds said further.

In the complaint, 50-year-old Top Gun actor charges that “through his representatives, plaintiff has attempted to correct these fabrications by providing defendants with the true bacts before the lies went to press. But defendants have demonstrated that they have no interest in the truth, and will stop at nothing to push the sales of their tabloids, even if this means exploiting a defenseless six year old child on their cover.”
