Cassette tapes have become a story of the past with the introduction of first CDs, DVDs and now Blu-ray discs. But still you might have some old ones pile in your store room, here’s a DIY activity which lets you make use of those cassettes to make a flashy, trendy and stylish lighting device.
The idea was perceived by San Francisco based design team called Transparent House who used the smaller size Micro-Cassettes instead of the more common standard music cassettes. The size probably makes the design nifty and also serves the purpose of retaining the retro essence of the tape. Over one hundred right or left wound tapes are arranged on laser cut plexi glass to create this unconventional lighting piece. If you want one of these and don’t think have the time to make one yourself, the designers are selling these for $1200 each with an extra shipping cost of $35.
Designer lighting devices have mostly been about intricate designs and whacky shapes but this one’s offbeat for the clever use of something like cassettes which would otherwise serve as a sovenier for your grandchildren.
