'Hanako-san' or ‘Hanako of the Toilet’: Amazing Art by Japanese Artists - - One of Japan's Most Infamous Ghosts

Hanako-san, or ‘Hanako of the Toilet’ is one of Japan’s most infamous ghosts that has captivated many Japanese artists. It’s no wonder why her ghostly figure strikes fear into the hearts of many, as what could be more spooky than finding a long-maned ghost floating in your toilet bowl?

The origins of Hanako of the Toilet’s existence is debated, from theories that she died during World War II while playing a game of hide and seek, to being murdered by her parents.

Whatever Hanako-san’s story is, the artwork that she inspires is eerie and have caused me to look twice into the toilet before I go.

"Hanako-san’s behavior also varies according to location, but in most cases, she remains holed up in the bathroom until an adventurous student dares to provoke her. Hanako-san can be conjured up by knocking on the door to her stall (usually three times), calling her name, and asking a particular question. The most common question is simply “Are you there, Hanako-san?” If Hanako-san is indeed present, she says in a faint voice, “Yes, I’m here.” Some stories claim that anyone courageous enough to open the door at this point is greeted by a little girl in a red skirt and then pulled into the toilet"
