Welcome Expo 2015 - - Giant Fuchsia Snails in Milan Constructed By Cracking Art Group

The Cracking Art Group has constructed giant fuchsia snails in Milan to begin drawing attention to Expo 2015, the World’s Fair to be held there in…well…2015. The group of artists specializes in larger than life artwork made entirely out of plastic. In fact, the Group’s name is partially derived from the name of the process used to refine petroleum into the raw materials for plastic.

Standing no chance of being mistaken for escargot, these fuchsia snails measure 10 feet long and 6 feet high. And to support the Group’s self proclaimed social and environmental committment, they are made of recycled plastic.

Why fuchsia snails? According to the Group’s web page, “Because we need to play with the city in order to rebuild it ideally and mentally and break with the daily urban routine rediscovering both the urban crossing and landscape.” Okay then. I think that means ‘because it was fun.’
