The rare breed of Tibetian Mastiff has become the world’s most expensive dog when Mrs. Wang from Northern China paid 4 million yuan ( ~ $600,000 ) and taken delivery of a 18 month old Tibetian Mastiff named Yangtze River Number Two.
Mrs. Wang arranged a motorcade of 30 black Mercedes-Benz cars lead by two SUV to transport her newly purchased Tibetian Mastiff to its new home. Now that’s what I call a royal welcome!
Yangtze River Number Two was greeted by dog-lovers upon its arrival in Xi’an airport. The welcome crowd was so large that many mistook the gathering for a (human) celebrity. Mrs. Wang was searching for the perfect dog for years until she found this Tibetian Mastiff, reportedly said “Gold has a price, but this Tibetian mastiff doesn’t”.
Owing pets was banned in China during Mao Zeodong’s reign who thought down owners were time-wasters! You still cannot own a large dog in Beijing even today.
In India too there is a history of Zamindars (local rulers who are in turn ruled by the king) were also known for excesses with their pets like spending millions for marriage of their cats, while poor people suffered and toiled to provide taxes for their opulence.
