Spherical Robot by Greg Schroll - - Finds Place in The Popular Mechanics’ 10 Most Brilliant Innovators of 2009

We’ve seen the robots in all kinds of shapes possible, good for all possible application. Yet, Greg Schroll a grad student at the Colorado State University has found a new shape for the robots, i.e. a spherical robot so awesome that it finds place in the Popular Mechanics’ 10 Most Brilliant Innovators of 2009. Now, that’s some achievement for the very first project maybe. What makes the bot so special, let’s read on to know a bit.

Only a prototype now, but like any developer Schroll too believes the bot to have serious applications and thus have the potential to be created real someday. The spherical robot with is dexterous make, marks advantages in all conditions - being least prone to dirt seeping in, fearless when it comes to any kind of tumbling, because the ball shape actually leaves no provision for that. These characteristics make the bot good to take on environmentally hazardous sites and underwater and space exploration.

The robot has been stuffed in with gyroscopes to maintain stability and to help the bot gain enough momentum to travel over rough and high terrains. Seeing great prospect in his prototype, Schroll’s hopes to create a working prototype to test here in Colorado, and he may have just got there. Check out the video here.
