Improved Redox Flow Batteries - - Electric Car Charging Time Can be Minimized to Minutes, Researchers at the Fraunhofer ICT

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology have improved the performance of redox flow batteries, making them a better alternative to lithium-ion batteries that are used in electric. The major downside of lithium-ion batteries is that they take hours to recharge, time which most drivers don’t have.

Redox flow batteries on the other hand make use of two fluid electrolytes that contain metal ions. When these batteries run out, they can be recharged by simply replacing the discharged electrolytes with recharged fluid, and the discharged electrolyte can be recharged at a gas station, which might use renewable energy for the same.

Until now, redox flow batteries have had the disadvantage of storing significantly less energy than Li-ion batteries and vehicles powered by them would be able to cover about a quarter of the normal distance, which means that anyone running on these batteries will have to recharge them four times as often.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer ICT state that they can increase the mileage four or five times, that brings redox flow batteries in competition to lithium-ion batteries, and can be recharged in minutes.
