SWINE FLU AT THE DOORSTEP OF INDIA

Swine flu cases are increasing rapidly in Indian cities. Six people have succumbed to the H1N1 flu including a four year old boy in southern city of Chennai. Almost in all metros there are confirmed cases of swine flu and health authorities are trying hard to control the spread of the virus by creating awareness through media.

The entire city of Pune, where there have been highest numbers of cases, has been shut down. Schools, colleges, shopping malls and cinema halls will be closed for next few days. Schools have been shut down in other parts of the country as well.

Government is trying its best to cope with the situation by opening testing centers for the disease and special quarantined wards and ensuring supplies of Tamiflu. Yet for a densely populated country like India it may not be adequate if it turns out to be deadly epidemic.

Already news of swine flu and deaths has created a panic among people. In cities people are seen using masks. Unfortunately it is difficult to distinguish between symptoms of flu and H1N1 flu. There are officially 800 confirmed cases of swine flu in the country. Numbers are expected to go up.
