The Pronto4 Strap-on Autonomy System converts the average, ordinary vehicles into unmanned autonomous vehicles, and apparently it does the job pretty well. The kit mainly consist of a control box, wires and actuators to move the steering. And that’s what it takes to create an autonomous vehicle all rearing to go.
During a recent demonstration, they showed a red pickup retrofitted with the kit and a “heavy weapon.” In addition to the basic kit, the demonstration vehicle had a GPS responder on the roof and emergency shutdown buttons were put above the headlights, taillights and inside the cab. The unmanned truck was able to reach a top speed of 90mph, and it also followed a series of waypoints set by an earlier manned vehicle. Manufacturers of the kit claim that any vehicle can be retrofitted in just four hours. The kits are intended primarily for military use, and will not be available to the general public.
