"Robot for Interactive Body Assistance" RIBA - - Robotic Nurses Are Gonna Take Charge in Japan


Hospitals need robots for surgery, for diagnosis, for moral raising therapy and for lifting patients from one place to another of course. At least the robot engineers think so, and thus researchers from Japan’s Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) and Tokai Rubber Industries, Ltd. have developed the RIBA - “Robot for Interactive Body Assistance”, which would help lift patients up to 61kg from out of their beds and wheelchairs.

Shaped as a chubby bear and weighing in at 180kg, made in soft skin of lightweight urethane foam, the bot is integrated with tactile sensors and flexible arms to facilitate in lifting patients. Fitted with omni-directional wheels for easy all round mobility, the intelligent robot is capable recognize faces and voices and top the same can also respond to the vocal commands. The fast and efficient robot bear will definitely bring in some fun into hospitals in Japan, good to let the patients feel better. Video of the robot nurse bear after the jump.
