HELMET FOR PEDESTRIAN

Scandinavians are known for their emphasis on safety. They invented the seat belt, the safety match, the paper clip, and the Nobel Peace Prize. Actually, though all of those are Scandinavian inventions, none are Danish.

Danes are not going to be any less than their neighbors when it comes to safety, however. According to Copenhagenize.com, the council for increased traffic safety in Denmark and Trygfonden, a Danish insurance company, has started a new campaign under the catchy slogan “A walking helmet is a good helmet” (it’s catchy in Danish: En gå hjelm er en go-hjelm).

The aim is to get pedestrians to wear a helmet, which can reduce head injuries by 60%. The new helmets will be available in the Danish Bikers Union shops but as they point out themselves, “A bike helmet is a fine substitute for walking helmets, so there’s no need to take it off when you get off your bike. Keep it on throughout the day for maximum safety.”

To encourage people to use the helmets they are offering people to put their personal touch on safety gear by creating their own designs.

It will be interesting to watch the development in safety in Scandinavia and see what they come up with next. The safety trends they start tend to spread to the whole world quite fast.
