With the revolution that can bee seen in the production of green energy, we have witness many pioneering technologies already. Nevertheless, the cost that is associated with solar power has persistently been a big area of concern. To eradicate the problem researchers in Golden have come up with an innovative solution what they call 'concentrated solar'.
The groundbreaking technology will aid in making concentrated solar more affordable. The idea works by using large panels of curved glass that focus the sun’s energy on a tube filled with oil. The heated oil then results in making steam, which powers a turbine and ultimately generates electricity. Using glass encounters a small drawback that is heavy weight and high cost. In order to overcome the problem a new metal reflector created with silver polymer will be used which will make the technology lighter and cheaper. Each concentrated solar channel is capable of lighting up 50 homes.
The pioneering technology has been successful to attract many energy producers. Xcel Energy, an energy producer was so impressed with the technology that it announced a new project near Grand Junction that will integrate concentrated solar with an already existing coal power plant. The project is expected to reach its fate by the end of 2009. Since the new metal reflector, technology is still not available, so until its availability they will manage with glass reflectors.
