The upcoming World Solar Challenge has kept universities all over the world busy in designing ecofriendly cars that run on electricity that they get from several meters of solar modules installed on the vehicle. The Bochum University of Applied Scinences in Germany is the latest to show off their ride, which they call the BOcruiser.
Like all other competitors in the World Solar Challenge, the vehicle is designed to run on solar energy, which is harnessed by a six square meter solar array installed almost everywhere on the vehicle’s body. The car has an aerodynamic body and carries advanced weight reduction systems, which increases the efficiency of the car.
The designers lowered the weight of the car by reducing the amount of paint that was applied to just one and a half layers, in comparison a new car has at least four coats of paint. The solar car will have its first outing in the World Solar Challenge, where it will cruise 3000km through the Australian outback.
