SKY SET TO LAUNCH FIRST 3DTV CHANNEL

Sky are set to launch the UK’s first 3DTV Channel by 2010.

This doesn’t surprise me as 3D films are becoming quite a major thing in cinemas nowadays and most of the blockbusters have some 3D scenes in them, whether they be the full film in 3D, or just certain parts of the film which you can watch at the IMAX.

There is a downside to this though, and that is the fact that you would have to buy yet another TV that was 3D Ready. When HDTV’s first came out, they were very expensive and I can see the same thing happening with 3D Ready TV’s. But how many people will be willing to part with the better part of £1,000 in this economic climate and then paying extra subscriptions to Sky?

With HDTVs and Sky HD only a few years old, are Sky moving too fast with the technology? And I can guarantee Sky will charge you quite a bit of money for the privilege of 3DTV. Some people might think this is a great thing, yet others, like me, disagree with the amount charged to customers to watch better quality channels. I can understand them needing to charge a little extra, but I personally think it’ll be too much.

To watch the 3D channels, you’ll have to wear ‘polarising glasses’. You’ll need these as the screen will trick our eyes by showing two different images, one for each eye, and this is what will give the picture the 3D look.

Sky have already broadcast a live event in 3D which was Keane when they played live from Abbey Road Studios. The major problem I can see with broadcasting 3DTV so early is the amount of channels available on launch, but I do have to admit, I’d love to watch 3D films or programmes like 24, Lost, Heroes in 3D in my own living room.

Only time will tell to how 3D at home will unfold.

What are your views on this announcement? Do you think it’s too soon to be broadcasting 3D into our homes or are you going to be one of the first people in the country to have this technology? One thing’s for sure! It’s going to be expensive!
