It’s that time when almost everything seems to be shifting gears towards USB 3.0 thick of things. Latest player in the game, LaCie has introduced a Rugged USB 3.0 external hard drive which touts 110MBps practical transfer speeds.



Now, if it’s for a layman – this is almost thrice as fast as the traditional USB 2.0 drives from LaCie and the other manufacturers. Powered by a USB 3.0 connection the 2.5-inch, 7,200RPM drive come in 500GB capacities, for the best part, the LaCie’s rugged USB 3.0 external hard drive is backward compatible with USB 2.0, which makes it useful for even you guys who don’t wish to upgrade to USB 3.0 just yet. Featuring a rugged make, the $150 drive is capable of withstanding drops from up to 7.2 feet, but why would someone want to test a hard drive by throwing? Well, there are all sorts of people, therefore we’ll see many gearing the drive for a fall test when it’s made available in May this year.
